GULF SHORES, Ala. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion softball dropped two games Saturday evening in the Gulf Shores Invitational, as they suffered a 1-0 loss to No. 19 University of Mobile and followed it up with a 3-1 loss to Keiser University in the nightcap.
Makenzie Prince suffered the loss for FHU (6-6) in the opening game, despite allowing just three hits while striking out six batters in seven innings of work. However, despite keeping the Rams (7-4) in check for a majority of the game, University of Mobile pushed one run across in the first inning, which would be all they needed to secure the win.
The Lady Lions continued to battle in the nightcap, but could not find the momentum they needed and fell 3-1 to Keiser (Fla.) University. The Seahawks (5-3) pushed one run across in the the second, fourth and seventh innings while the Lady Lions could only muster one run in the sixth inning.
Makenzie Prince led the Lady Lions at the plate, as she went 2-for-2 on the day and contributed two of FHU's four hits in the game. Mallory Spurlock suffered the loss for Freed-Hardeman despite working a complete game and striking out eight batters. Rylee Agnew picked up the win for Keiser University, as she worked a complete game and allowed just four hits while striking out two.
"Our pitching and defense is what is keeping us in games," said Todd Humphry, head coach for the Lady Lion Softball team. "Our hitting and lack of offense is the reason we are coming up short in these one-run games."
With the Saturday sweep, the Lady Lions fall to 6-6 on the season.
