Lady Lions Sweep Hornets In Thursday Shutout

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion softball team concluded the regular season on a high note Thursday afternoon, as they picked up a sweep of Harris-Stowe State University with a pair of shutouts from the FHU pitching staff.

Makenzie Prince (15-6) picked up the win in the opening game, as she worked a complete game and allowed just six hits while striking out six batters. Sophia Chamberlain suffered the loss for Harris Stowe (6-23, 2-20 AMC) after working a complete game and allowing nine hits and five earned runs while striking out one.

Emily Bombard led the Lady Lions (30-11, 22-2 AMC) at the plate, as she went a perfect 3-for-3 in the opener with a double, a triple and an RBI. Annalise Jarnagin joined Bombard in the hitting frenzy, as she went 2-for-3 at the plate with a homerun in the win.

The Lady Lions did a majority of their damage in the top of the third inning, as four runs crossed the plate. Emily Bombard got the scoring drive started for FHU with an RBI triple to to deep right field to score Brittan Jarrell and put FHU up 1-0. Bombard found her way home in the next at bat following an RBI single by Makenzie Prince to put FHU up 2-0.

Annalise Jarnagin completed the scoring drive for the Lady Lions in the top of the third inning, as she connected on a two-run homerun over the center field wall to give FHU plenty of cushion at the 4-0 mark.

The momentum continued for the Lady Lions throughout the remainder of the game, as they pushed one run across in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 6-0 lead, which was all they needed to come away with the victory.

The nightcap was much of the same, as it took the Lady Lions just five innings to pick up the 11-0 shutout over the Hornets. Mallory Spurlock (14-4) picked up the win in the second game of the double-header, as she worked three solid innings and allowed just three hits while striking out five batters. Hannah Wright provided two innings of relief and allowed no hits while striking out one.

Annalise Jarnagin continued her dominance at the plate in the nightcap, as she pounded out her second homerun of the day and went 3-for-4 in the box with two RBI. With the two-homerun day, Jarnagin sits at nine homeruns on the season. Annaka Baxter also pounded out a homerun and three RBI in her only plate appearance of the nightcap.

The Lady Lions got their scoring drive started in the first inning, as they pushed one run across to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. From there, FHU needed just two solid innings to take down the Hornets, as they pushed five runs across in the second inning and five more in the fourth inning to secure the nightcap victory by a final tally of 11-0.

With the Friday sweep, the Lady Lions move to 30-11 on the season and 22-2 in conference play. Harris-Stowe State University falls to 6-23 on the season and 2-20 in AMC play with the loss.
