CLERMONT, Fla. - [Bracket] The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion Softball team saw one of their best seasons in program history come to an end Monday afternoon, as they were eliminated from the NAIA Softball World Series with a 9-0 loss to No. 8 Southern Oregon University in Clermont, Fla.
Mallory Spurlock (18-7) suffered the loss after pitching her third game in the last four days. In the final game of her college career, the Florence, Ala. native worked a complete game and allowed eight hits and five earned runs.
Gabby Sandoval (25-6) picked up the win for Southern Oregon (49-14), as she worked seven innings and allowed just eight hits and no earned runs while striking out four.
Despite the loss, FHU had six different players record hits in the game, led by Caitlyn Carter and Emily Bombard who each had two hits in the match-up. Miscues plagued the Lady Lions all afternoon, as they committed four errors that led to scoring opportunities for the Raiders.
Southern Oregon needed just three innings to put things out of reach for FHU, as they started the game with a two-run first inning and followed it up with two runs in the third inning and three more in the fifth inning to make a comeback unlikely for the Lady Lions. Two more runs followed for Southern Oregon in the top of the seventh inning to make the final tally 9-0 to eliminate FHU from the World Series.
With the loss, the Lady Lions end their season with a record of 36-16. Southern Oregon University moves to 49-14 on the season with the win and advance to play the loser of Columbia College and Marian (Ind.) Tuesday at 11:00 AM C.S.T.
