ORLANDO, FL – The No. 15 Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions (2-0) began their highly anticipated 2022 campaign with a pair of shutout victories against Webber International (3-3) on Thursday afternoon. The wins marked the first 2 of 6 games for the Lady Lions in Orlando.
Pitching was the story of the day for the Lady Lions, as returning starters Morgan Crawford and Chloe Winters both pitched complete game shutouts Thursday afternoon.
Game 1 of the doubleheader had all the makings of a pitching duel between the two teams. Neither team was able to muster a base hit through the first three innings. Then, a Kennedy Harris triple to right center field broke the game open. The next at-bat, Sophie Dunavant brought her home with a single through the left side to make it a 1-0 ballgame. That would be all Morgan Crawford needed, however she added some insurance for herself and hit a double down the left field line to bring in Madelyn Crabb to make the game 2-0. Crawford finished the game only allowing 3 hits and striking out 6, closing out a 2-0 victory for the Lady Lions.
Chloe Winters got the start on the mound in game 2. Winters pitched a complete game, striking out 5 and only allowing 5 hits in the 5-0 victory. Senior catcher Sophie Dunavant hit a 2-RBI double in the 3rd inning to open the scoring. Dunavant would add to her day at the plate with a 2-RBI triple in the top of the 7th to push the lead out to 5-0.
The Lady Lions will continue their Florida road trip on Friday with a double-header against Warner University in Lake Wales. Game one is set to start at 3:00 PM CST.
