Softball improves to winning record with two wins

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Opening the Gulf Shores Invitational, the (RV) Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions picked up a pair of victories first against the College of Saint Mary (Neb.) Flames 4-0 before walking off the (RV) Middle Georgia State Knights 5-4 in eight innings.

The first game of the day was a low-scoring affair with the Lady Lions (4-4) scoring one run in the bottom of the third inning to take an early lead.

A two-run single from Christa Warredn helped push FHU's lead out to put the game out of reach of the Flames (2-7).

Karli Quillin led FHU with three base hits while Warrens single driving in two runs.

Kylee Brown (3-2) was nearly untouchable, shutting out the Flames and allowing just one hit while striking out five.

The Lady Lions (5-4) survived a late scare from Middle Georgia despite holding a lead a majority of the game. Gracie Wilson and Karli Quillin helped FHU jump out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning.

Brinley Cousar connected for a two-run single to push FHU's lead over the Knights (9-6) to 4-1 after five innings. MGA would tie the game in the seventh inning, but Cousar saved the day with a single in the eighth to walk off with the win.

Cousar and Karli Quillin each were 2-4 from the dish with Cousar driving in a team-high three runs.

Anna Rogers had the start where her seven-inning effort saw her strike out seven batters. Kylee Brown (4-2) entered in relief in the eighth inning where she retired the side in order to earn the victory.
