Softball MSC Press Release

Weather and field conditions affect MSC Softball Tournament

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- While the champion of the Mid-South Conference Softball Tournament is scheduled to be crowned on Sunday, the weather turned out to be the ultimate winner.

Continuous rain in the Clarksville, Tennessee area has made field conditions unplayable and impossible to finish the tournament in its current double-elimination format.

The tournament is reduced to a single elimination tournament per Article IV, H, 1 to help determine its champion and the team that receives the automatic bid into the NAIA national tournament.
The rule states:
In the event of inclement weather, the following will be used to determine the conference's automatic qualifier:
If inclement weather interrupts/cancels play so that it becomes impossible to complete a double-elimination bracket by the qualifying deadline, the tournament will become single elimination. Any teams with a loss remaining in the bracket would be automatically eliminated from the tournament.

The two teams remaining in the winner's bracket of the tournament -- Cumberlands (Ky.) and Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) -- will play at 2 p.m. CT on Sunday in the championship game.

With Sunday's weather forecast less than desirable, conference officials alerted the two remaining teams that if the game is cancelled, the regular season champion, Cumberlands, will be deemed the champion, per the conference bylaws.

Top-seeded Cumberlands and second-seeded Freed-Hardeman each won their respective winners' bracket semifinals on Thursday.
