CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — After the spring weather whittled what was expected to be a double-elimation tournament with four remaining teams to a winner-take-all Championship game the No. 2 seed Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions were unable to secure a conference tournament repeat in a 4-0 loss to the top seed University of the Cumberlands Patriots.
The Lady Lions (20-15) got a hit from
Chloe Carter, but solid outfield defense from the Patriots shut down the FHU offense in the inning.
Cumberlands (37-7) led off their half of the first with a triple, who later scored on a sacrifice fly.
Christa Warren smacked a big double to right-center in the top of the third was was unable to score. FHU's best chance came in the top of the sixth after a pair of singles from Carter and Briley Cousar sandwiched a four-pitch walk to
Myleah Hardy with two outs. The Patriots called on a new pitcher who coaxed a groundout to retire the Lady Lions.
Chloe Carter recorded two of FHU's five hits with
Brinley Cousar,
Myleah Hardy, and
Christa Warren each connecting for one.
Katy Gartrell (4-2) got the start where she struck out two in 3 1/3 innings.
