Lady Lion softball falls to Eagles

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. — In a Tuesday doubleheader, the (RV) Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions fell twice to the (RV) Williams Baptist (Ark.) University Eagles. After a 4-2 defeat, FHU fell short in game two, 9-8.

A late comeback for the Lady Lions (15-15) came up short in the first game. Alivia Eggleston had solo home run in the top of the fourth frame before Karli Quillin drove home the tying run in the fifth.

A two-run homer from Williams Baptist (25-10) put the hosts up for good.

The Lady Lions had six different Lady Lions record a single hit, with Alivia Eggleston and Karli Quillin each driving in a run.

Madelyn Cornelus had the start in the circle, twirling 4 1/3 innings where she struck out one. Anna Rogers (2-2) was charged with the loss after 1 2/3 innings of relief.

The Lady Lions (15-16) took the early lead with a three-run first inning. All three runs would score on extra-base hits. Lynnlee Brown added a solo homer in the fifth inning to help push FHU to a three-run advantage.

Williams Baptist (26-10) only needed one big inning, scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead FHU could not recover from.

The Lady Lions smashed a season-high 18 base hits, led by Chloe Carter's perfect 5-for-5 day.

Christa Warren and Abbi Storey hit back-to-back doubles before Karli Quillin smacked an RBI triple. Chloe Carter then drove Quillin home with an RBI double. Annalee Qualls had three hits, while Brooklyn Rader, Karli Quillin, Abbi Storey, and Christa Warren each had two.

Katy Gartrell (5-6) pitched all six innings for FHU, striking out seven in the effort.
