SILVIS, Ill. — The Freed-Hardeman University Lion golfers had one of their best outings in the NAIA Preview at the site of the National Championship at TPC Deere Run. In the first round the Lions finished at 305 (+21) before shaving off a stroke to score 304 (+20) in the second round to combine for 611 (+41). The score had FHU land in a tie for sixth place out of 21 competing teams.
Lucas Gupton led the charge for FHU's golfers by carding a 75 (+4) in the first round before trimming three strokes to 72 (+1) at the par-71 course. Gupton was a master of the par-5 holes, scoring birdies across both rounds on three holes while celebrating an eagle on the par-5 second hole. He also sank a birdie on the par-4 first hole in the second round to end with a two-round 147 (+5) and have a tie for seventh plac.
Exactly one stroke behind was
Drew Massengale. After a first round where he scored 76 (+5) with one birdie, his second round of 72 (+1) was highlighted by six birdies: three on par-4s and three on par-5s. Ending with a share of ninth place, Massengale finished his tournament with 148 (+6).
In sole possession of 33rd place with 154 (+12)
Ben Sebilian scored 77 (+6) in both rounds, but the first round was even-keeled with 14 pars. The second round was up-and-down for the senior with three birdies, but more holes finished over par.
Lane Walton's week was highlighted by a birdie on the par-5 second hole in his second round. After scoring 77 (+6) in the first round and 83 (+12) in the second, his 160 (+18) had him land in a tie for 60th place.
Cameron Long wrapped up FHU's scoring with an 88 (+17) on the first 18 before scoring 85 (+14) in the second to combine for 173 (+31) to place 90th.
