Lane Walton matches low round in opening round of Music City Classic

OLD HICKORY, Tenn. — Lane Walton's opening round matched Freed-Hardeman's single-round low as he led the Lions at the Music City Classic. Eight teams finished under par, with FHU's 881 (+17) placing them 15th overall.

Walton's 65 (-7) in the first round matched the program's lowest recorded round, previously set by Easton Lavelle with a 65 (-6) on a par-71 layout, giving Walton the lower score relative to par. In that first round, the freshman began his tournament with three straight birdies, on the par-5 14th, the par-3 15th, and the par-4 16th holes. His biggest shot was an eagle on the par-5 18th hole. He would add two more birdies to finish the record-breaking round. His three-round 214 (-2) had him finish in a tie for 22nd place and also broke his own record low in a 54-hole tournament.

Drew Massengale ended the first and second rounds at even par, before capping the third round at one under par. In the first round, Massengale had birdies on the 15th and 18th holes. In the second round, before he trimmed a stroke off of the 18th hole to card an eagle. Three birdies in the third round helped him shoot 215 (-1) to finish in 28th place.

After a birdie in the first round, Lucas Gupton got down to as low as four strokes under par during the second round. He had two par-5 birdies, plus birdies on par-3 and par-4 holes. With a three-round 223 (+7), Gupton finished with a share of 66th place.

Carson Nau had a pair of birdies in the first round, before doubling up that total with a four-birdie second round. Carding birdies on the 16th and 18th holes in the final round, Nau's 229 (+13) helped to finish in a tie for 84th place.

With three birdies in the first round, Gabe Webb finished FHU's scoring with a par on each distance. In the second round, he had two par-4 birdies before sinking a birdie on the par-5 18th hole in the finale round. Finishing in 104th place, Webb had an aggregate 248 (+32).
